Personally i think if you want to work on the theme you might want to consider using easily changeable theme's and branding, a bit like the wordpress theme's as far as the user experience is concerned.
This will be possible with the 1.1.0 release. We converted all templates to XHTML 1.0 strict. This allows you to change the layout and behavior by changing the CSS files only. We might even provide the current design on the new templates if it keeps us from maintaining several versions of template files.
